Carmen Uscatu: When Cancer Is Not Just a Constellation…

Carmen Uscatu, Founding Member and President of Give Life, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“When cancer is not just a constellation.

When cancer is the reality that surrounds you, hope is what heals you. And behind hope, there is action.

Yesterday, in the halls of the oncology ward at Marie Curie Hospital, I saw parents. Parents taking a walk with their children – with IV poles trailing behind them. I saw parents talking with other parents. I heard hurried footsteps, uncertain steps, heavy steps. Steps. Faces marked by worry passed before my eyes. Eyes searching every second for an answer, or gazing right through you. I saw timid smiles. I saw hope. But also despair. A mix. And the bustle of doctors. Tests, protocols, observation sheets. Files. Deadlines. DRGs. Funding. Or the lack of it.

Just an ordinary day.

We conducted interviews with doctors and nurses. We are in the process of evaluating Marie Curie Hospital using a tool from St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. It helps us, in the end, to identify problems, prioritize them, and move toward solving them. Why are we doing this? So that every child treated at Marie Curie has a chance to survive. And more than that: to return to the good life they had before. Because yes, when you fall ill, there is no greater GIFT than LIFE. That life we sometimes take for granted when we’re healthy. The good life.

Give Life will not stop bringing hope into the hearts of parents. Give Life will continue to put smiles on the faces of children. And on the faces of nurses and doctors. And beyond hope and smiles, it will not stop building. Chances for Life.

Give Life continues with me. And with all of you. So we can build a medical campus. A project in which and through which we heal. All of us.”
