“I had the pleasure of co-chairing, together with Stephanie McDonald, a great session at WCLC2026 dedicated to bringing the diverse and increasingly important aspects of survivorship in metastatic lung cancer into the spotlight.
The session highlighted that living longer with metastatic lung cancer requires us to look beyond disease control and address the broader physical, psychological, and social dimensions of survivorship. The important role of physical rehabilitation was highlighted by Morten Quist, while David Hui discussed the need to address shortness of breath through an integrated approach that combines pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions.
A particular highlight of the session was hearing directly from patient advocate Sofia Jubany, who shared her personal experience with the audience and brought the topic of survivorship into a deeply meaningful and human perspective. Elizabeth Castronovo shared her insights on Symptoms of Toxicity and Their Long-Term Management.
Last but not least, Yeur-Hur Lai reminded us that the fear of recurrence can have a profound and sometimes debilitating impact-not only on the person living with cancer, but also on their family.
Sessions like this remind us that as more people live longer with metastatic lung cancer, survivorship must become an integral part of comprehensive cancer care. Our goal should be not only to help patients live longer, but also to help them live as well as possible.”
