Amar Rewari, Chief of Radiation Oncology at Luminis Health, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“For too long, anal cancer has been the cancer no one talks about.
I was recently interviewed by the Daily Mail US for a story highlighting how this “taboo” disease is quietly rising among women – many of whom were never eligible for the HPV vaccine.
As I shared in the piece:
“HPV can remain dormant for years, quietly disrupting the body’s natural defenses until precancerous changes evolve into cancer.”
Nearly 9 in 10 cases are caused by HPV, the same virus linked to cervical, throat, and other cancers. Prevention and vaccination save lives – but awareness and open conversation matter just as much.
I’m grateful to journalist Emily Joshu Sterne for bringing attention to this issue, and to patient advocate Erin Sullivan Wagner, whose courage in sharing her experience helps break stigma and drive early detection.
We need to talk about these “uncomfortable” cancers — because silence helps no one.
