Amy C. Moore: Could Severe COVID-19 Increase Lung Cancer Risk?

Amy C. Moore, Director of Patient Engagement and Advocacy at Summit Therapeutics, Inc., shared a post by Lung Cancer Europe on LinkedIn, adding:

“I am not that surprised by this report. I voiced my concern about this possibility early in the pandemic.”

Quoting Lung Cancer Europe on LinkedIn:

“Severe COVID-19 may be associated with an increased subsequent risk of lung cancer.

A new study published in Cancer Cell suggests that severe respiratory viral infections can leave lasting changes in the lung environment that may accelerate tumour growth.

The research combines analysis of a 75.9 million adult cohort with experimental models. Together, the findings suggest that severe viral pneumonia may create conditions in the lung that allow tumours to grow more rapidly.

While further research is needed, the study highlights how infections may have long term effects on lung biology and why understanding these mechanisms could matter for lung cancer prevention, monitoring and care.”
