To my colleagues across oncology, healthcare, research and patient advocacy: what are the conversations we are not having enough of?
The questions patients may be thinking but never ask. The things doctors sometimes feel but rarely say. The pause before an answer. The story that almost gets told. The meaning we make of illness. The words we use. The identities we carry. And the extraordinary amount that happens in the space between two people sitting across from one another.
Because patients do not arrive as scans and blood tests.
And doctors do not arrive as degrees and white coats. Both arrive carrying entire lives.
In this first Oncology Couch, I invite you to explore treatment versus care, the nervous system and the story, the power of language, identity and healing, and some of the questions I believe deserve more space in modern oncology. As oncology becomes ever more technologically sophisticated, our opportunity is to become more human.
