Abhishek Shankar, Associate Professor of the Department of Radiation Oncology at All India Institute of Medical Sciences and Secretary General at the Asian Pacific Organization for Cancer Prevention (APOCP), shared a post on LinkedIn:
“It was a privilege to visit the University of British Columbia (UBC), Vancouver, for the invited lectures and research collaborations, at the kind invitation of Prof Stephen Lam sir and Sukhinder Atkar-Khattra ma’am. I had the opportunity to deliver lectures on “Environmental and Occupational Determinants of Lung Cancer Screening” and “Lung Cancer Screening: Risk Factors Beyond Smoking.” These discussions highlighted the growing need to expand our understanding of lung cancer risk beyond tobacco exposure and to recognize the important contributions of air pollution, occupational carcinogens, radon, biomass fuel exposure, and other environmental determinants, particularly in low- and middle-income countries.
As the science of lung cancer screening continues to evolve, integrating these risk factors into screening strategies will be essential for improving equity and maximizing public health impact. I was happy to discuss AIRCARE Study and Indian Lung Screening Trial in detail that I am leading as principal investigator at AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi).
The visit provided an excellent platform for engaging discussions with researchers, clinicians, and public health experts from UBC. Our conversations explored opportunities for collaborative research, implementation science, risk prediction models, environmental exposure assessment, and strategies to strengthen evidence for policy development in diverse healthcare settings.
A special note of gratitude to The Prof. Stephen Lam sir for his warm hospitality, and the opportunity to interact with the exceptional UBC research community. The thoughtful discussions, valuable insights, and inspiring exchange of experiences made this visit truly memorable. It was great to see the city and experience the natural beauty and vibrant culture of Vancouver, Victoria and Surrey with Prof Lam, Sukhinder ma’am, Suman amd Ajeet.
I look forward to nurturing these collaborations and transforming shared knowledge into meaningful impact.”
