Abdu Adem Yesufe: A Public Health Milestone as Ethiopia Clears the Marburg Virus

Abdu Adem Yesufe, Program Director of Adult Hematology and Medical Oncology Fellowship at St. Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College (SPHMMC), shared a post by Yakob S Ahmed, Co-Founder & Family Medical Network Chair at Family Insurance and, and Nardos Keyema, Marburg Virus Case Management Team Member at Jinka General Hospital, on LinkedIn, adding:

“The remarkable resilience of the Ethiopian healthcare system in tackling emerging health challenges and national emergencies is truly awe-inspiring and cannot be fully captured by congratulations alone!!

Finally!! This is a remarkable achievement for the Ethiopian healthcare system’s resilience to emerging health threats. Congratulations to all stakeholders and teams for their unreserved efforts through the most challenging circumstances!!”

Quoting Yakob S Ahmed‘s post:

“Congratulations to our healthcare professionals.
Congratulations to the Ministry of Health, EPHI, WHO, and all partners involved.

We are officially free from the Marburg virus outbreak in just 73 days since the first confirmed case.

This is not by chance.
This is capacity.
This is preparedness.

WHO declares an outbreak over after 42 consecutive days with no new confirmed cases.
That equals two full incubation periods.

Now look at the progress across countries.

Ethiopia cleared the outbreak in about 73 days.
Tanzania took about 82 days.
Rwanda took about 84 days.
Equatorial Guinea took about 121 days.

What does this tell us?

Our emergency response systems are getting stronger every time. Information flow is improving. Workforce and resources are mobilized faster. Facilities are more ready. Case management is stronger. Infection prevention is better. Laboratory capacity keeps growing.

This is progress in action.
This deserves recognition.
This deserves appreciation.

Thank you to everyone who stood on the frontlines and made this possible.

Public health works when systems work.”

Quoting Nardos Keyema‘s post:

“Congratulations!
Ethiopia has officially been declared free from the Marburg Virus.”
