Hathal Haddad: A New Era of Focal and Organ-Preserving Salvage Treatment for Prostate Cancer

Hathal Haddad, Head of Interventional Radiotherapy Unit at University Hospital Tübingen, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“14 Days Until Brachytherapy Awareness Day 2026. Focal Interventional Radiotherapy (Brachytherapy).

A New Era of Focal and Organ-Preserving Salvage Treatment for Prostate Cancer.

Local recurrence after radiotherapy does not always mean the end of curative treatment.

For carefully selected patients, focal salvage HDR brachytherapy offers a second chance for cure while treating only the recurrent tumor and preserving the remainder of the prostate and surrounding organs.

A recently published prospective study demonstrated encouraging long-term outcomes with excellent safety using MRI- and PSMA PET-guided focal HDR brachytherapy delivered in two fractions of 13.5 Gy.

Key Results

  • 59 patients
  • Median follow-up: 54 months
  • 3-year biochemical failure-free survival: 54%
  • Freedom from ADT or repeat salvage therapy: 82%
  • Late Grade ≥3 GU toxicity: 1.7%
  • Late Grade ≥3 GI toxicity: 0%

Why focal salvage HDR brachytherapy?

  • Treats only the recurrent lesion.
  • Preserves uninvolved prostate tissue.
  • MRI- and PSMA PET-guided precision.
  • Minimally invasive outpatient procedure.
  • Preserves urinary and bowel function.
  • Organ-preserving alternative for carefully selected patients.

This study highlights the evolution of Interventional Radiotherapy (Brachytherapy) toward increasingly personalized, image-guided, and less invasive cancer care.

Treat less. Preserve more. Cure when possible.

Brachytherapy saves lives.

17 July 2026 – Brachytherapy Awareness Day.”
