Hil Moss: What’s New in Cancer Survivorship?

Hil Moss, Cancer Advocate and Content Creator, Co-Founder and CEO of OncoveryCare, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“What’s new in cancer survivorship?

I hope all are enjoying the end of summer (how did that happen?). I’m back with a few more favorite survivorship reads from the last couple of months.

Brianna Abbott’s latest for The Wall Street Journal sheds light on a critically important topic: survivors living with metastatic cancer. To quote the piece:

‘A small but growing population is living longer with incurable or advanced cancer, navigating the rest of their lives with a disease increasingly akin to a chronic illness.’

Metastatic survivorship IS survivorship, and we must provide the appropriate care to help manage chronic and late effects of treatment, behavioral health support, and more.

NPR (Yuki Noguchi) continues its survivorship series ‘Life, after diagnosis’ with an exploration of the significant behavioral health challenges faced by young, male cancer survivors. (And the support systems built to address this, such as MAN UP TO CANCER).

The Washington Post was one of many outlets to cover the highly publicized New England Journal of Medicine study on the link between exercise and mortality in colon cancer survivors.

The study, which leveraged a three-year structured exercise program post-active treatment, found that those who participated in the program had a 37% reduction in risk of death over time – a huge signal for the health benefits of movement in the survivorship phase.”
