Pauline Ryan: Empowering Cancer Leaders Through Lived Experience Program

Pauline Ryan, Program Manager, Statewide Consumer Leadership Program at VCCC Alliance, shared VCCC Alliance‘s post on LinkedIn, adding:

“This leadership program aims to support and amplify diverse leaders with lived experience of cancer!

Congratulations to the lived experience leaders from across the state, program, and partner organisation staff. This is another milestone moment for this pioneering program.

In awe of those involved and the incredible 21 participants and 11 mentors who are involved with this initiative.”

Quoting VCCC Alliancea‘s post:

“Like diamonds, we reflect the light

This was the sentiment from a participant in the first face-to-face ‘Lead from Lived Experience: Enhancing cancer care’ program held recently. This leadership program aims to support and amplify leaders with lived experience of cancer, assisting them in their individual leadership journey, as well as in the broader cancer sector.

Following the initial online education program, 21 diverse participants from across Victoria – including one joining remotely from overseas – came together for this landmark event.

‘Diamonds form under pressure. Everyone in this room knows what pressure is like; we have all been affected by cancer. Like diamonds, we reflect light’, the participant reflected at the end of the session.

This powerful analogy encapsulates the spirit of our initiative, turning challenging experiences into sources of strength and illumination for others.

Together, these leaders are driving meaningful change and improvement in cancer care.

The Lead from Lived Experience program is a key initiative of the broader Cancer Consumer-led Research Partnership involving people with lived experience of cancer – consumers – and staff from five leading cancer control organisations:

  • VCCC Alliance
  • Monash Partners Comprehensive Cancer Consortium (MPCCC)
  • Regional Trials Network – Victoria (RTN-Vic)
  • Cancer Council Victoria
  • University of Melbourne

This partnership aims to improve outcomes for all Victorians affected by cancer by fostering collaboration in consumer leadership and consumer-led research across the state, driving positive changes in the healthcare system.
