Erika Hamilton: An update from the previous 2016 guideline and a couple highlights

Erika Hamilton shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Thanks to News Nation and Nichole Berlie for having me on to highlight yesterday’s U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPTF) updated breast screening recommendations.

This was an update from the previous 2016 guideline and had a couple highlights.

They now recommend mammograms starting at 40 (instead of previous guideline of 50). This is more in line with American Cancer Society, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and American College of OB/GYN who all have previously recommended 40 as the starting age.

This guideline still recommends mammograms every 2 years, again this is in contrast to most other organizations including the 3 above recommending YEARLY mammograms. I disagree here and think mammograms should be yearly for early detection. This is our practice at Sarah Cannon Research Institute.

They also call out specific areas that need intervention. Namely that despite Black women not having higher rates of breast cancer, they are over 40% more likely to DIE of their breast cancer. Glad to see this specifically pointed out with a call to action to closing this health inequity.”
