We have been able to bring novel state-of-the-art clinical trials to patients in the Tampa Bay region and beyond, many of which would not have access to trials otherwise – David Swoboda
Over the past 2 years, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing and being a part of extraordinary growth and progress at TGH Cancer Institute (Cancer Center of South Florida). Under the exceptional leadership of Eduardo M. Sotomayor, Abe Schwarzberg, John D. Couris, Peggy Duggan, MD, and Kelly C., we’ve achieved incredible milestones in cancer care and we are only just getting started. As I reflect on my experience, I wanted to highlight a few of our accomplishments with a specific focus on growth in malignant heme and leukemia programs.
1. Multi-Disciplinary Inpatient Malignant Heme/Cellular therapy Service: We fostered a collaborative environment where hematologists, internists, infectious disease physicians, pharmacists, nurses, and support staff worked together, sharing their expertise to devise personalized treatment plans for each patient. This teamwork ensured the best possible outcomes for our patients.
2. Clinical Trials: We have been able to bring novel state-of-the-art clinical trials to patients in the Tampa Bay region and beyond, many of which would not have access to trials otherwise. We have multiple ongoing trials for AML patients, my area of focus and interest.
3. Expanding Services: We performed the first autologous stem cell transplant at Tampa General Hospital on September 27th, 2022. This program continues to rapidly grow under the leadership of Ivan Borrello. Additionally, we opened a brand-new infusion center at TGH Outpatient Center in Brandon.
None of this would have been possible without the dedication of our amazing team and the support of Tampa General Hospital. As I look to the future, I am energized by the possibilities that lie ahead. Our mission remains steadfast—to improve cancer care and make a positive difference in the lives of those we serve each and every day.
