“Can a selfie help predict cancer survival?
A new study in Lancet Digital Health reveals that FaceAge AI, a deep learning tool that estimates biological age from a simple photo, can sharpen survival predictions in patients with incurable cancer.
Key insight: Patients who appear biologically older than their actual age tend to have poorer outcomes.
Incorporating FaceAge into clinical models improved prognostic accuracy, supporting oncologists in tailoring treatment decisions and care planning.
While more work is needed to address ethical and technical challenges, this research highlights the potential of AI-driven facial analysis to enrich oncology’s toolbox of prognostic markers.
