Giuseppe Banna: Age Is Not a Barrier – Nivolumab Efficacy in Older Patients with mRCC
Giuseppe Banna, Head of Translational Research and Clinical Trials Unit of Thoracic Tumours at Candiolo Cancer Institute IRCCS and Consultant Medical Oncologist for Lung and Urology at Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust, shared a post on LinkedIn about a paper he co-authored with colleagues published in the Journal of Geriatric Oncology:
“Age should not be a barrier to immunotherapy in metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC).
In our large, real-world multicentre analysis of 889 patients treated with nivolumab-based regimens, overall survival and progression-free survival were comparable between older patients (≥70 years) and younger ones.
Importantly, the Meet URO score outperformed the IMDC model for prognostic stratification, particularly in the older population, supporting its role as a valuable tool to guide clinical decision-making.
These findings reinforce the need for tailored, evidence-based approaches that ensure older patients are not excluded from effective treatments solely on the basis of age.”
