Nirmala Bhoo Pathy: Critical report on strengthening primary healthcare for cancer control in Southeast Asia was a privilege

Nirmala Bhoo Pathy made the following post on LinkedIn:

“Contributing to this critical report on strengthening primary healthcare for cancer control in Southeast Asia was a privilege.

A tapestry woven from expertise, policy, and lived experience – bound by a commitment to equitable access – laid the groundwork for this impactful work.
Kenneth Hartigan-Go, Stephen Jan, Kara Magsanoc-Alikpala, Cecilia B. Padilla and Carolyn Taylor.

Key points:

  • Strengthening Southeast Asia’s primary healthcare is crucial for equitable cancer control, as it often serves as the only accessible option, especially in rural areas.
  • Tackling access barriers requires a multi-pronged approach, including bolstering healthcare workforce training, leveraging digital tools, and empowering communities.
  • Training healthcare workers in task shifting and utilizing teleconsultation, telementoring, and translated health apps are essential for rural areas.
  • The pandemic’s lessons, like remote training’s potential and increased political will, should be harnessed for lasting cancer control efforts. Thanks to Alexandra Zenoff and Asia Society for bringing us together, this piece is amazing!”
