Blood stem cell and bone marrow transplants can provide hope for patients – Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center

Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center posted on LinkedIn:

Natalia Tijaro Ovalle, a Hematology/Oncology Fellow at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) knows firsthand that blood stem cell and bone marrow transplants can provide hope for patients. But these transplants rely on donors, and finding a suitable match can be difficult, especially for ethnically diverse patients.

Tijaro Ovalle joined the NMDP registry in 2018 with the hope that she might be a match for a person in need. Last year she got the call, and traveled to donate to a patient with myeloid dysplastic syndrome.

‘It was a full circle moment for me to participate in the process as a person and a donor, not just a doctor. I felt like I was the luckiest person in the world to be able to be a match and donate.’

More donors like Tijaro Ovalle are needed, which is why MSK is working with NMDP on the “American Symphony: Become a Lifesaver” campaign. Learn more about how you can join the symphony and help save lives.”
