UICC Highlights Study Linking Cancer and Higher Risk of Drug-Resistant Infections

UICC – Union for International Cancer Control shared a post on LinkedIn:

“A groundbreaking study published in The Lancet Oncology reveals that people living with cancer are up to three times more likely to suffer from drug-resistant infections, compared to those without cancer.

Certain specific pathogens that can cause life-threatening infections, such as those causing bloodstream infections or occurring after surgery or chemotherapy, were up to five times higher among cancer patients. The research was led by the Cancer and AMR Consortium – a collaboration between UICC, BD, and the AMR Action Fund.

Experts stress that antimicrobial resistance (AMR) could disrupt cancer treatments like chemotherapy, surgery, and innovative therapies like immunotherapies delaying treatment and worsening outcomes. The study emphasises the need for reinforced infection prevention and control, better diagnostics, and timely access to effective antimicrobials.”
