Matt Sherer: ASCO Supports Permanent Medicare Telehealth

Matt Sherer, Director of Oncology Service Line at UMC Health System, shared on LinkedIn:

Telehealth: During the Public Health Emergency, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) allowed expanded telehealth use for Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services beneficiaries. This has ensured that cancer patients maintain access to high-quality care while helping providers reach diverse populations, including those in rural areas and individuals facing barriers to in-person visits.

Without Congressional action by September 30, telehealth flexibilities will end in October. US Congress needs to act to make telehealth permanent for Medicare patients, ensuring access regardless of location.

The American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) is urging US Congress to support legislation that will permanently extend telehealth services, ensuring continuous access for patients to essential care. Specifically, ASCO has endorsed the Creating Opportunities Now for Necessary and Effective Care Technologies (CONNECT) for Health Act of 2025 (H.R. 4206/S. 1261), which is currently pending in the United States Senate.

This legislation aims to make telehealth flexibilities for Medicare services permanent. An identical bill is expected to be introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives soon.

Contact your lawmakers and urge them to support the permanent extension of Medicare telehealth flexibilities.”
