“The European Cancer Organisation presented on the 15th of November, the first day of the European Cancer Summit, the Manifesto for the European Parliament elections 2024.
Designed as a summary of the Manifesto, the European Cancer Charter expresses in short form the headline asks from the European cancer community ahead of EU-wide elections in 2024 and the creation of a new European Commission.
Key points for EU decision-makers:
1. Fulfill the promise of Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan and the EU Research Mission on Cancer—renew political commitment.
2. Refresh plans with advancements in hereditary cancer understanding, early detection, and personalized medicine.
3. Expand the pan-European goal-oriented approach to address inequalities in cancer care.
4. Report progress on existing goals annually, such as HPV cancer elimination and a tobacco-free generation.
5. Propose new goals, like achieving a 70% ten-year survival rate for all European cancer patients by 2035.
6. Position Europe as a global leader—synergize efforts with global initiatives like WHO’s cervical cancer elimination and US Cancer Moonshot.
7. Address the oncology workforce crisis with shared goals and initiatives.
