Kimryn Rathmell: I am thrilled to be joining to The Ohio State’s James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute as CEO

Kimryn Rathmell, 17th Director of the National Cancer Institute, shared on LinkedIn:

“The efforts to end the burden of cancer, to remove the stigma and fear associated with cancer, to completely understand and harness cancer – in the many forms it takes – are wrapped up in a goal to create a cancer-free world.
Engaging all of these goals, I am thrilled to be joining the exceptional team of investigators, clinicians, caregivers and staff members of The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center-James Cancer Hospital & Solove Research Institute as CEO. The opportunities to harness the combined forces of exceptional cancer clinical services and an impactful research enterprise are truly exciting. To include the community is a richly powerful and meaningful asset as we all strive for a new future reality for cancer.

These are the factors we will all need to tap into as we meet the moment for our patients: bold, innovative and rigorous science; dedication to delivering on the promise of personalized medicine that brings a personal approach to risk assessment, prevention, detection, treatment and care; authentic and bidirectional communication with the community, and the opportunity to develop our phenomenally talented young cancer researchers.

I’m proud to join my new Buckeye colleagues across The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and all of The Ohio State University to make the kind of difference we all want to see for our families and the kind of difference we want to create for patients world-wide.

The James has a longstanding reputation for innovative research and exceptional, compassionate care that reduces the burden of cancer and provides hope and healing to patients and families across the entire State of Ohio and within our incredible ecosystem of the greater cancer community.

We all know that cancer is a formidable foe, and that this requires the dedicated coordination of exceptional clinical care, innovative discovery science, commitment to mentorship, and translation of ideas in clinical research for robust testing and implementation in the right populations.

What I have come to realize is that there is a further element to the secret sauce: broad engagement with the community to fully realize this amazing potential.
\Partnerships like Pelotonia fuel progress and give energy to the work, connection with the public through community-engaged research and dialogue drive meaningful change, and strong relationships with the exceptional network of cancer centers and cancer researchers worldwide accelerate progress.

Our mission is clear, and cancer has never presented an easy target. We must engage every person, still my favorite goal of the National Cancer Plan. There is no more tangible way that I can think of to work across these spaces today than from the middle of our great nation, in partnership with the multitude of stakeholders who are dedicated to creating a cancer-free world.”
