Yan Leyfman: A key to Understanding Allergies

Yan Leyfman, Co-founder and executive director of MedNews Week, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“A key to Understanding Allergies.

The gut is constantly exposed to food and microbial antigens—so how does it avoid inflammation? A newly identified subset of antigen-presenting cells (APCs) may hold the key. Researchers have discovered Prdm16+ RORγt+ tolerizing dendritic cells (tolDCs) that are essential for generating peripherally induced T regulatory (pTreg) cells—key players in establishing oral tolerance.

These tolDCs are myeloid in origin, distinct from ILC3s, and share features with classical dendritic cells. Loss of these cells leads to increased Th2 responses and impaired tolerance in models of asthma and food allergy. Single-cell analysis of human tissues suggests these cells are conserved across species—offering new therapeutic insights into autoimmune and allergic disease, and even organ transplant tolerance.”
