How tobacco smoking contributes to development of cancers of the head and neck – IARC/WHO

The complexity of tobacco smoke-induced mutagenesis in head and neck cancer

This study highlights that tobacco smoking is the primary cause of genomic alterations in head and neck cancers, with combined exposure to tobacco and alcohol leading to a higher mutagenic effect.

It emphasizes that 7 out of 10 head and neck cancer cases are caused by preventable behavioral risk factors like smoking and alcohol use. The findings underscore the urgent need to reduce tobacco and alcohol exposure to lower cancer incidence.
