Wafaa M Rashed: Childhood cancer remains severely underfunded and under-researched
Wafaa M Rashed, Faculty Lecturer of pharmacy at Ahram Canadian University, reshared a post by United Nations Office at Geneva on LinkedIn, adding:
“Childhood Cancer Is a Human Rights Issue.
The Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) is the most ratified international human rights treaty. It upholds four key principles:
- Non-discrimination
- Right to life and development
- Children’s participation
- Prioritizing children’s best interests
But how can we claim to uphold these rights when childhood cancer remains severely underfunded, under-researched, and out of global health priorities 400,000 children are diagnosed with cancer each year. Yet, survival depends not on medical advances but on where a child is born.
Childhood cancer is a human rights issue. It directly aligns with CRC’s principles:
- Non-discrimination → No child should die because they lack access to treatment.
- Right to life and development → Pediatric cancer care is not a luxury—it is a right.
- Children’s participation → Young patients deserve a voice in their treatment and future.
- Prioritizing children’s best interests → Funding, policies, and research must reflect this commitment.
If childhood cancer is not prioritized on the global health agenda, are we truly upholding children’s rights?
I call on the UN and world leaders to recognize this injustice and act.
Childhood cancer care is not charity—it is justice.”
