Loay Kassem: Breast saving surgery without radiotherapy could be the new standard for EBC
20 years ago, this would have been considered a crime. Today, this could be the new standard. I will tell you why.
Postmenopausal women with very early breast cancers (pT1 N0) who are ER+ and receive endocrine therapy have very low recurrence rates. This is why some recent studies tested whether or not to give post op radiotherapy in such patients.
I am proud to be among a great team who conducted a systematic review and meta analysis of 7 trials and 4860 patients to answer this question.
Our results are clear.
Adding radiotherapy in such patients can reduce local and nodal recurrence rates (which are already low) but not cancer mortality or distant metastases.
Thanks to the wonderful team Emad Shash, Amira Mohamed Taha, Dalal Salem, Hanaa Abdelmoneim, Yehya Khlidj, Sara Adel, Khaled Abouelmagd, Sanskriti Chaplain and Dang Nguyen.”
