“On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science (IDWGS), observed today, 11 February, we highlight the ESMO Women for Oncology (W4O) Committee and its decade-long commitment to advancing gender equity in oncology.
Since its establishment in 2015, ESMO W4O has been dedicated to supporting career development, building professional networks for female oncologists, and addressing the underrepresentation of women in leadership roles in oncology.
This year’s IDWGS theme, ‘Charting progress to shape the future: the best is yet to come,’ reminds us of the strides mad – and the challenges ahead – in achieving gender equity in STEM fields, including oncology.
Over the last 10 years, ESMO W4O has been conducting monitoring and authorship studies that show some progress—but also highlight persistent disparities, particularly in breaking the glass ceiling in oncology leadership.
The journey toward gender equity in STEM and oncology is far from over. Together, we can build a future where everyone thrives and drives meaningful change. ESMO remains committed to fostering Equal Opportunities and creating an inclusive environment for all.
