Ulrika Årehed Kågström: Increasing knowledge about early signs of cancer among men
Ulrika Årehed Kågström, President of UICC, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Every year, almost 5,000 more men than women are diagnosed with cancer, and almost 900 more men die from the disease. A large part of the explanation lies in the fact that men are less likely to seek care for early symptoms – and this can be the difference between life and death.
A new survey from the Swedish Cancer Society also shows that certain groups of men are particularly vulnerable. Single men, for example, have a 30 percent higher risk of dying from malignant melanoma than men who live with a partner.
This is a serious public health problem. Early detection saves lives, but in order for more men to seek care, increased awareness and targeted efforts are required. From the Swedish Cancer Society’s side, we are now gearing up our work to reach more men and increase knowledge about early signs of cancer. But if we are to succeed, we need more people who do more.
Please read more on SvD’s debate about some of the efforts needed to get more men to have their cancer detected in time – it saves lives.”
