“So thrilled to learn that Prof. Tony Hunter, from the Salk Institute for Biological Studies has been named the 2024 Prince Mahidol Award Laureate in Medicine.
His pioneering research on the tyrosine kinase enzyme and the phosphorylation process has transformed our understanding of cellular mechanisms, leading to groundbreaking advancements in cancer therapy.
Prof. Hunter’s discovery paved the way for the development of targeted cancer treatments by inhibiting tyrosine kinase enzymes, resulting in 86 tyrosine kinase inhibitors being approved, including the life-saving Imatinib (Gleevec) for leukemia.
With a legacy of innovation, Prof. Hunter joins the ranks of an esteemed group – 96 Prince Mahidol Award laureates, six of whom went on to win the Nobel Prize after.”
