Celebrating 50 Years of Excellence: UT Health San Antonio MD Anderson Cancer Center
UT Health San Antonio MD Anderson Cancer Center, also known as the Mays Cancer Center, marks its 50th anniversary in 2024
The Mays Cancer Center is part of UT Health San Antonio and was founded in 1974.
Over the years, it has built a strong reputation for providing comprehensive cancer care, including prevention, detection, treatment, and research.
The center is engaged in clinical trials and research, particularly in cancer drug development, offering eligible patients access to treatments not yet approved for broader use. Clinical trials at the Mays Cancer Center address various aspects of cancer care, including prevention, detection, and supportive therapies.
The center features specialty cancer programs where experts provide treatment for specific types of cancer. Treatments include robotic surgery for precision procedures and immunotherapies that stimulate the immune system to target cancer cells.
In 2017, the Mays Cancer Center partnered with MD Anderson Cancer Center, becoming one of a few centers nationwide to do so.
This partnership allows the Mays Cancer Center to offer advanced cancer care in San Antonio. MD Anderson’s expertise is integrated into the center’s services, expanding treatment options and enhancing the quality of care provided to patients.
The Mays Cancer Center provides comprehensive care, including testing, treatment, and support services. The center also offers cancer prevention services, such as screenings, genetic testing, and resources to help manage or reduce cancer risk.
The Mays Cancer Center’s patient and family services department provides support through resources like cooking demonstrations and social services assistance.
The Mays Cancer Center is one of only four NCI-designated cancer centers in Texas and the only one in South Texas.
This designation recognizes the center’s long-standing commitment to cancer research, including basic science and clinical studies.
The center is also involved in community outreach and educating the next generation of cancer researchers in South Texas.
With its NCI designation, the Mays Cancer Center provides access to advanced therapies for residents of San Antonio and the 38 counties in South Texas.
“50 years stronger! We are proud to celebrate the 50th anniversary of UT Health San Antonio MD Anderson Cancer Center. The future for South Texas is bright, thanks to their legacy of pioneering research and transformational care.”
