Thomas Powles was awarded the Gordon Hamilton Fairley Medal
Barts Cancer Institute (Queen Mary University of London) shared a post on LinkedIn:
“The BCI has awarded Professor Thomas Powles, our commemorative Gordon Hamilton Fairley Medal in recognition of his outstanding work transforming outcomes in bladder cancer.
In his award lecture, Professor Powles reflected on the challenges and successes he faced on his journey to uncovering life-extending treatment combinations for bladder cancer.
The medal commemorates the life of Gordon Hamilton Fairley, the first Professor of Medical Oncology in England, who built a world-leading oncology unit at Barts Hospital. Tragically, Professor Fairley’s life was cut short by a terrorist bomb in London in 1975 at the age of 45.
Professor Fairley was a pioneer in the fields of chemotherapy and immunotherapy, and his visionary work laid the foundations for decades of world-leading oncology research at Barts and Queen Mary’s – including Professor Powles’.”
Thomas Powles, specializing in urology cancer, holds the position of Professor at the University of London since 2012 and serves as the Director of Barts Cancer Centre, a CRUK Major Cancer Centre.
With a role in biomarker development and drug strategies, he has secured multiple EMA and FDA approvals.
His achievements include advancing front-line immune/targeted therapy combinations in RCC and immune checkpoint inhibition in bladder cancer. He completed his education from Queen Mary University of London.
