New Seminar Series in Bioinformatics and Genomic Analysis – St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital
St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Having the skills and understanding to leverage data science is increasingly important, not just for the technology sector, but for anyone seeking to make informed decisions in a data-driven world. At St. Jude, a new seminar series was added to the High School Research Immersion (HSRI) program to help students build a strong foundation in bioinformatics and genomics analysis—fields that are critical to advancing biomedical research.
The series was developed by Ninad Oak, PhD, of the Department of Oncology, in collaboration with Evadnie Rampersaud, PhD, and Gang Wu, PhD, from the Center for Applied Bioinformatics. The trio were active in mentoring students to build on their interest in pursuing scientific careers.
Oak, who helped lead the seminar, emphasized its importance:
‘We want to expose the students to many different fields within STEMM. If even one sparks their interest or helps them see themselves as future scientists, that’s a huge win.’
The seminar featured interactive lectures from St. Jude scientists, covering topics such as statistical genetics, immunology, sequencing technologies and the applications of artificial intelligence in biomedical sciences. According to Oak, “By exposing attendees to the breadth of these fields, we hope they find inspiration in one or more areas and envision themselves contributing to scientific research in the future.”
Beyond technical expertise, students developed essential soft skills through two sets of peer-led presentations. Early in the series, students presented background information on their research topics and later shared their complete findings. These experiences helped refine their science communication skills and build confidence presenting to varied audiences.
