Oncology and Primary Care Involvement in Breast Cancer Survivorship Care

A recent article by Archana Radhakrishnan, Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Michigan, was mentioned by Julien Vos, Research fellow in cancer survivorship at Harvard Medical School, on LinkedIn:

“Oncology and Primary Care Involvement in Breast Cancer Survivorship Care More Than 5 Years After Initial Treatment”

Authors: Archana Radhakrishnan, Allison Furgal, Ann Hamilton, Kevin Ward, Christine Veenstra, Sarah Hawley, Steven Katz, Joy Lee, Lauren Wallner.

Oncology and Primary Care Involvement in Breast Cancer Survivorship Care

“A recent study in JCO Oncology Practice reveals that 57.2% of breast cancer survivors continue to see their oncologists 5+ years after treatment, while primary care involvement remains low.

This is surprising, especially since primary care providers (PCPs) can effectively manage survivorship care, achieving outcomes comparable to oncologists. Failing to transition survivors to primary care adds unnecessary strain on already overburdened oncology services.

These results underscore the need for risk-stratified care models to ensure patients receive the right care at the right time. Read more about the study in JCO Oncology Practice.”
