Miami Dolphins Partner with Sylvester Cancer Center and ACS to Tackle Health Disparities in Cancer Care

Dolphins Cancer Challenge shared a post on LinkedIn:

“We are thrilled to announce our impactful partnership with Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center and the American Cancer Society as a part of the National Football League (NFL)’s Crucial Catch initiative.

Together, we are addressing critical cancer health disparities affecting Hispanic and Caribbean populations.

This collaboration will support groundbreaking research and the establishment of a new Cancer Health Equity Research Center at Sylvester.

By focusing on solutions for these disparities, we are advancing the fight for health equity and making a meaningful difference in our community.

Thank you Jeri Ramos, Christina Annunzita, Joanne Elena and William Dahut for joining us at Miami Dolphins and Hard Rock Stadium this Sunday to celebrate the partnership!”

Miami Dolphins, founded in 1966, were the ninth team to join the American Football League (AFL) before merging with the National Football League (NFL) in 1970.

They remain the only team in NFL history to achieve a perfect season, finishing both the regular season and playoffs undefeated with a 17-0 record. Based in South Florida, the Dolphins have won 13 AFC East division titles, five AFC championships, made 25 playoff appearances, and secured two Super Bowl victories.

Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, part of the University of Miami Health System and Miller School of Medicine, is South Florida’s leading academic-based cancer center.

With over 3,160 physicians, researchers, and staff, Sylvester provides world-class care and conducts cutting-edge research to treat cancer. The center is dedicated to reducing cancer risks through education and community programs.

As the only NCI-designated cancer center in South Florida, Sylvester is recognized for its high performance in treating cancers like leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma. It also offers South Florida’s only Phase 1 clinical trials program and is one of five Cancer Centers of Excellence in Florida, currently conducting over 430 clinical trials.

In 2019, Sylvester earned the prestigious National Cancer Institute designation, reaffirmed in 2024, placing it in the top 4% of cancer centers nationwide. This recognition enhances Sylvester’s ability to provide advanced therapies, clinical trials, and cancer prevention programs, benefiting both patients and the community.

The American Cancer Society (ACS) is a national, community-based health organization committed to eliminating cancer as a major health threat.

American Cancer Society

Founded in 1913, it works through research, education, advocacy, and services to prevent cancer and reduce the challenges faced by those diagnosed with the disease. With two million volunteers, ACS funds cancer research and supports scientists in their studies. It also serves as a trusted source for cancer-related statistical data and epidemiological information.

Through its “Resources, Information, and Guidance Program,” the ACS offers information and support to individuals and families impacted by cancer, connecting them with services that address their practical, social, and emotional needs. The society publishes guidelines to help physicians with cancer prevention and early treatment recommendations and actively advocates for cancer-related policies at local, state, and national levels, informing policymakers about the disease’s impact and the importance of health legislation for cancer patients.
