Arif Kamal: The beauty of transforming a person’s story into words in serious illness care
Arif Kamal shared a post on LinkedIn:
“A few years ago, I was introduced to Jenny Hegland from The Good Listening Project by my mentor and friend Peggy Maguire.
Peggy and the Cambia Health Foundation funded my career development award back in 2014 through the Sojourns Scholars Program, in what has turned out to be a decade-long (and growing) commitment to the leaders of serious illness care.
The future of serious illness care is in great hands because people like Peggy, Jennifer Fuller and Mark Ganz (former CEO of Cambia Health Solutions) have cared so deeply.
Through Cambia I was introduced to The Good Listening Project, a nonprofit that brings listener poets to people who have a story to tell. There’s a beauty in taking a person’s story and summarizing it in the written word. I’ve had a poem written about my story a few times, the most recent from when I started my role at the American Cancer Society.
It has been so moving for my own career, I brought the opportunity to my teammates at ACS through an initiative called ‘My Why’.
As colleagues discuss their ‘Why’ for joining the fight against cancer, the hope is we all get more closely connected to the spark that makes our hearts beat in this work.”
Arif Kamal is the first-ever Chief Patient Officer for the American Cancer Society and drives efforts to advance cancer care.
