“Published today. First paper in this project that is very dear to my heart. Thanks Fidel Rubagumya for leading our paper on medical tourism in cancer care in Africa. First paper ever to tackle this issue. As Africans seek cancer care outside their borders and especially outside the continent, there are huge costs to individuals, families and national economies.
Some of medical tourism is unavailable at this stage but there are many ethical, social, equity and economic challenges. I specifically encourage everyone to read the discussion section where we talk about these issues. ‘The annual expenditure of Nigerians on international health services is estimated to be $1 billion in US dollars with 60% of the money spent on oncology, orthopedics, nephrology, and cardiology.’ So lots more research is needed in this area in order to make the case for investment in local health systems.”
