Timothy Mullet’s legacy at the Commission on Cancer
Timothy Mullett, MD, MBA, FACS, is a professor of surgery in the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University of Kentucky, where he has served for 25 years.
His clinical practice focuses on lung cancer, a major health issue in Kentucky, and he is a key member of the UK Markey Cancer Center, Kentucky’s only National Cancer Institute-designated center. He has held various leadership roles, including state chair for the Commission on Cancer and was elected national Chair in 2019.
Currently, he is the medical director of the Markey Cancer Center Affiliate Network, enhancing cancer care accessibility through collaborative programs. His research includes lung cancer screening and reducing its burden through initiatives like the Kentucky LEADS Collaborative.
Dr. Mullett is also a retired Army Reserve colonel with 27 years of service, having completed tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, and is an eight-year cancer survivor himself.

Dr. Laurie Kirstein, is a Breast Surgical Oncologist at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, where she has practiced since March 2016. She specializes in providing advanced surgical care for patients with breast cancer. Additionally, she is affiliated with Beth Israel Medical Center, where she applies her expertise to improve patient outcomes.
Dr. Kirstein actively engages in research and collaborates with the oncology community to enhance surgical techniques and patient support in breast cancer treatment.
