“Excellent infographic from American Council on Exercise (ACE Fitness) to help define the words that we use in the realm of all things body movement or alternatively to little movement!

I would love to encourage all of my lifestyle medicine cancer community to consider using the language that defines the objectives that we are striving for. We cannot be fearful of dancing around words that people don’t want to hear.

Early in my career I had countless conversations that individuals with cancer didn’t want to talk about exercise. My response was often that I doubted most individuals wanted to talk about having a cancer diagnosis but the reality was that we had another tool to improve outcomes and while we are often afraid to recommend exercise, we would give medicines with life altering side effects and not even give it pause.

I believe that some of this can be resolved by using the correct language. Beth Frates, Cate Collings, Susan Benigas something for consideration in this pillar?”

Quoting American Council on Exercise (ACE Fitness):

“Understanding the Difference: Physical Activity vs. Exercise, Sedentary Behavior vs. Physical Inactivity

The terms physical activity and exercise, and sedentary behavior and physical inactivity are often used interchangeably, but they have distinct meanings:

Physical Activity: Any movement that requires energy, like cleaning, cooking, or leisurely walks.

Exercise: A specific type of physical activity that is planned, structured, and done with the goal of improving fitness—think exercise classes, weightlifting, or swimming.

In other words, all exercise is physical activity, but not all physical activity is exercise.

Sedentary Behavior: Low-energy activities such as sitting, lying down, or desk work.

Physical Inactivity: Not meeting the recommended levels of physical activity, like doing too little exercise.

To put it simply: Sedentary behavior = sitting too much. Physical inactivity = not moving enough.
