Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center as South Florida’s only NCI-designated cancer center

Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center renewed its status as an NCI-designated cancer center, achieving an “Outstanding” score from the NCI.

NCI-Designated Cancer Centers are institutions recognized by the National Cancer Institute for their excellence in cancer research, treatment, and prevention. These centers are at the forefront of cancer research and often conduct significant clinical trials, develop innovative treatments, and contribute to the understanding of cancer biology.

There are 72 NCI-Designated Cancer Centers, located in 36 states and the District of Columbia, that are funded by NCI to deliver cutting-edge cancer treatments to patients. Of these 72 institutions:

  • 8 are Clinical Cancer Centers, recognized for their scientific leadership, resources, and the depth and breadth of their research in basic, clinical, and/or prevention, cancer control, and population science.
  • 57 are Comprehensive Cancer Centers, also recognized for their leadership and resources, in addition to demonstrating an added depth and breadth of research, as well as substantial transdisciplinary research that bridges these scientific areas.
  • 7 are Basic Laboratory Cancer Centers that are primarily focused on laboratory research and often conduct preclinical translation while working collaboratively with other institutions to apply these laboratory findings to new and better treatments.

“Five years after being awarded the prestigious National Cancer Institute (NCI) designation, we’ve earned it again. In a state with the second-highest cancer burden in the U.S., the renewal affirms our institutional commitment to continue pursuing cancer cures and cements our role as the only designated cancer center in South Florida. We earned NCI’s high marks five years ago with innovative programs in clinical care, research and community outreach. For this renewal, we presented transformational new programs and initiatives, expanding our impact since the first NCI designation.

‘Sylvester’s scientific contributions not only directly serve the needs of its community but also impact cancer care across the country and the globe by changing practice, influencing policy and shifting research paradigms,’ said Dr. Stephen Nimer, who has led Sylvester, part of the University of Miami Health System and University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, since 2012. Learn why NCI designation matters.”
