The 2nd Edition of the Annual BMC Chhattisgarh Cancer Conclave took place successfully, from September 20th-22nd, 2024.

It was centered around the theme ‘Choosing Wisely 2024 – Common Sense Oncology for outcomes that matter.’

This year, the BMC aimed to tackle critical issues surrounding cancer care accessibility and quality in Central India. The event marked the fifth anniversary of the Choosing Wisely initiative in India, in collaboration with ecancer, Tata Memorial Centre, and the National Cancer Grid.

Dr. Bhawna Sirohi, Medical Director of BALCO Medical Centre, noted the inaugural conclave’s success and highlighted this year’s patient-focused theme that emphasized evidence, sustainability, and financial viability in cancer care. The scientific agenda addressed crucial topics, including research priorities, Universal Health Coverage (UHC) in India, patient advocacy, and evidence communication.

The conclave featured a live surgical demonstration on pancreatic and gastric cancer and introduced a National Oncology Nursing Conclave, alongside various workshops. By gathering global and regional experts, the BMC Chhattisgarh Cancer Conclave aimed to enhance cancer education and foster informed clinical decisions that align with patient outcomes. This annual flagship event continues to serve as a vital platform for oncologists, researchers, and healthcare professionals to exchange knowledge and tackle emerging challenges in oncology.

I had very encouraging and thought provoking conversations with Women Oncologists of India and abroad about challenges faced by women Oncologists in their cancer journey at Balco.

Apart from that I had an expert talk on ‘Choosing wisely for radiotherapy for endometrial and cervical cancers’.

In between the 2 sessions I had a virtual talk in TYACAN on ‘Radiotherapy for Pediatric low grade gliomas’. Although these were completely diverse topics, I thoroughly enjoyed during the preparation as well as the delivery of the talk.”

“The session on Head and Neck Cancer at the 2nd BMC Cancer Conclave and 5th ed eCancer was grand.

I had the opportunity to present our six year data on microvascular reconstructions in Head and Neck. A comprehensive data on 529 microvascular reconstructions including the wide variety of flaps and their innovative modifications we use to suit the complex defects was presented on the main podium.

We were mesmerized by the enlightening talk on Common sense oncology in Head and Neck Cancers by none other than Anil D’Cruz sir.

It was followed by an interesting panel discussion on improving quality of life and survivorship in head and neck cancer patients in India, where I had the opportunity to emphasize the role of a skilled Plastic Surgeon in the multidisciplinary team.

The 2nd Annual Cancer Conclave and the 5th edition of eCancer India 2024 organised by BALCO Medical Centre (A Unit of Vedanta Médical Research Foundation) spanned over three days was also a great platform to interact with the best minds in the field of Oncology, across the world.
