Women in the health and care sector earn 24 percent less than men

“Today, on International Equal Pay Day, we recognize a critical issue highlighted by WHO and ILO: women in the health and care sector face a staggering 24 percent pay gap compared to men across the sector.

With women making up 67% of the global workforce in this vital sector, closing this gap is essential for achieving gender equality and empowering women.

Key steps to address the pay gap:

• Improving gender-disaggregated wage data
• Investing in decent jobs
• Promoting pay transparency
• Tackling the motherhood gap

By taking targeted action, we can ensure equitable pay and support the health and care workforce, ultimately moving us closer to Universal Health Coverage and a fairer future!”

Shirin Heidari, Senior Technical Consultant of Gender, Equity and Human Rights at the World Health Organization, shared on LinkedIn:

“It’s sad and unjust that women in the health and care sector, despite the instrumental role they play, still earn less (24%!!!!) than men!”
