Matthew Herper: Facing cancer is hard — even if you’re someone who would change the way we treat cancer
Matthew Herper, Senior Writer, Medicine, and Editorial Director, Events at STAT, made the following post on X:
“Facing cancer is hard — even if you’re someone who would change the way we treat cancer. See the piece I have out today.
Kathy Giusti, a pharma exec turned patient advocate, became a big deal in drug development. In the words of FDA’s Rick Pazdur, ‘We would not be where we are today in the treatment of multiple myeloma without Kathy’s leadership.’
Kathy’s version? ‘I’ve had every resource you can imagine. I have a great family. I have great friends. I had good insurance. I had everything I needed to do it right. And even I messed up. A lot.’
I’ve followed Kathy’s story for years. But what emerged in conversations after she wrote a book was how tough her journey was and how tough she was in confronting it.
So I hope you like the story I wrote today. And maybe you’ll want to check out her book.
The full story is here. I hope there’s a lot to learn here.”
