Jung Hwan Baek: RFA strategy and procedure for trachea invading thyroid cancer

Jung Hwan Baek, Professor at Asan Medical Center, shared on LinkedIn:

“Trachea invading thyroid cancer (arrows). After total thyroidectomy, Sagittal CT images show the recurrent tumor grow inside the trachea along the anterior tracheal wall. Cricoid cartilage is destroyed by the tumor.

RFA strategy and procedure
(1) The tumor locates along the anterior tracheal wall and lumen.
(2) RFA without application of tracheal stent under local anesthesia – Direct puncture of the tumor by electrode (ultrasound image).
(3) The patient stayed at hospital only 1 hour.
(4) 3-month after RFA, tracheal invading tumor is markedly decreased.
(5) No RFA associated complication (mild coughing during the RFA)
(6) EBRT is not considered for this patient.”
