“I am thrilled to share that I have been nominated for a UHL Recognition Award 2024 in the patient’s choice category. I was very moved when I received an email earlier this month, and today I received the certificate in the post. This special recognition has made me deeply reflective, especially since this week marks three years since I moved to the UK from Toronto, Canada, and started working at University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust
Reflecting on the three-year anniversary of starting my new role, I am overwhelmed with a profound sense of accomplishment and gratitude. These past three years have been truly transformative, professionally and personally, providing me with opportunities I could have only dreamed of when I first started in this position. When I began this job three years ago, I was full of hope but uncertain about what lay ahead. I knew I was taking on a role with great responsibility, but I couldn’t have fathomed the breadth of opportunities that would come my way.
Since taking on the Breast Cancer Clinical Trials Lead role over a year ago, our breast cancer trials portfolio has expanded, resulting in remarkable success stories, improved patient experiences, and a collaborative working environment. A few weeks ago, I was officially announced as the head of the breast cancer unit. I am genuinely excited about the progress the breast cancer unit will continue to achieve under my leadership.
In addition to the breast cancer unit, these past three years have allowed me to pursue initiatives that are deeply personal to me, particularly in addressing cancer health inequalities. The disparities in cancer care have long weighed heavily on my heart, and I am immensely proud to have been able to advocate for and implement programs to reduce these gaps. Whether through community outreach, education, or policy advocacy, these initiatives have allowed me to channel my passion for social justice into tangible action. There is still much work to be done in this area, but I am dedicated to continuing this fight to ensure that all patients, regardless of their background, have access to the care they need.
Looking ahead, I am filled with excitement about the possibilities that lie in front. My experiences over the past three years have prepared me to take on new challenges, explore new ideas, and continue to push the boundaries of what is possible in breast cancer care. I am particularly eager to expand our efforts in addressing cancer health inequalities, working towards a healthcare system that is truly equitable and just.

Dr. Olubukola Ayodele is a Consultant Medical Oncologist at the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust, specializing in breast and genitourinary malignancies, including germ cell tumors. She is also an honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Leicester and heads the Breast Cancer Clinical Trials Unit at the Leicester Cancer Research Centre. Dr. Ayodele’s work includes numerous publications, clinical trials, and collaborative research projects on molecular drivers and biomarkers in breast cancer. She is a member of ASCO, ESMO, ACP and UKBCG.
