Danladi Adamu Bojude: Lets champion community-based cancer care

Danladi Adamu Bojude, Professor of Epidemiology and Community Oncology at Gombe State University, shared on LinkedIn:

“Globally, every 1 minute, 1 woman dies of cancer, and 2 men die of cancer, making cancer one of the greatest threats to our health and livelihood.

Most of these deaths are women in Sub-Saharan Africa. These women are in their prime of life, raising children, caring for their families and contributing to social and economic fabric of their communities.

But it doesn’t have to be this way, if these women had access to cancer diagnosis and treatment at the early stages in our communities where they live and work.

Most recently, on June 28, 2024 Nigeria officially declared cancer a notifiable disease, to bolster the fight against cancer, this landmark declaration marks a crucial advancement in the nation’s efforts to address the escalating cancer crisis, and the renewed hope and commitment to combating the growing burden of cancer across the nation.

Please join us on 30th July, 2024 as I present the 10th inaugural lecture titled:
CHAMPIONING COMMUNITY ONCOLOGY: SAVING LIVES; EMPOWERING COMMUNITIES at the Gombe State University, Gombe.

Lets champion Community Oncology, i.e community-based cancer care and control spanning the breadth of cancer control continuum in the community from:

1. Cancer prevention and advocacy;
2. Screening, early detection and treatment of early disease;
3. Community-based cancer diagnosis;
4. Community-based treatment;
5. Community-based survivorship and end of life care;
6. Community-based trials and research;
7. etc.

I believe our communities are resourceful with bountiful of opportunities to strengthen our health care, and together with the ever growing digital technology, we can leverage the trio of community-based resources, digital technologies and collaborations to strengthen our health system and the economy.”
