
Oncology Nursing in Focus at the Armenian–German Oncology School
The 7th meeting of the Armenian–German Oncology School (ArGOS) took place on Friday at the Mikaelyan University Hospital in Yerevan, with a program devoted entirely to the role of nurses in oncology care. Armenian–German Oncology School Continues with a Day Dedicated to Oncology Nursing.
The session was opened by Geghanush Stepanyan, President of the Armenian Nurses Association, Head of the Department of Nursing Management at YSMU, and Chief Nurse of the Mikaelyan University Hospital. In her welcome remarks, she emphasized the importance of the event as a platform for knowledge and experience exchange, expressing hope that the collaboration between Armenian and German colleagues will remain continuous.
The audience included nurses from chemotherapy departments of different Armenian hospitals, while the speakers represented both Armenian and German institutions. The program covered central and peripheral catheter management, drug administration, infection prevention, monitoring of laboratory tests after chemotherapy, and broader issues of patient safety in oncology nursing.
Anush Iritsyan, Senior Nurse of the Oncology Clinic at Mikaelyan University Hospital, delivered a detailed presentation on “Care and Management of Port Systems / Central Venous and Peripheral Catheters.” German colleagues shared insights into their own nursing workflows and organizational practices, while Armenian participants contributed local perspectives and raised practical questions.
Discussions also addressed the importance of continuous professional development for oncology nurses, with a special focus on the formats of specialized education in Armenia and Germany. Geghanush Stepanyan announced that she has already submitted a proposal for a three-week training course dedicated to oncology and chemotherapy nursing, aiming to further strengthen skills and improve care standards.
The visiting German specialists praised the professionalism, engagement, and enthusiasm of Armenian nurses, noting their strong commitment to advancing oncology care.
The event once again highlighted the critical role of oncology nurses in ensuring patient safety and high-quality cancer treatment, while underlining the value of international collaboration in professional education.
