”For a child with suspected cancer, every day spent waiting for a diagnosis can delay the treatment they urgently need.
In Cameroon, six laboratory professionals from Baptist Hospital Mutengene and Ekoundoum Baptist Hospital recently completed a four-day telepathology workshop. The training will help them examine samples, capture detailed digital images and securely share them with specialist pathologists for review.
At the heart of the workshop were two new digital microscopes, donated by World Child Cancer through our transformative collaboration with Amgen (Sean Lybrand, Philip Anderson). These microscopes will enable hospital teams to access specialist pathology support remotely, even when a pathologist is not based at their facility.
The workshop was led by Evans Mbanga, Fuh Anold Nsoh and Welang James, whose practical guidance helped participants build the confidence and skills to use the technology in their own laboratories. Continued mentorship from the pathology team at Mbingo Baptist Hospital will support them as they put their learning into practice.
By bringing together new technology, local expertise and strengthening connections between hospital teams, this initiative can help children receive an accurate diagnosis sooner and begin the right treatment without unnecessary delay.
