Maryam Lustberg: Rethinking Menopause Care Across the Breast Cancer Journey

Maryam Lustberg, Director of the Center for Breast Cancer at Yale University School of Medicine, shared on LinkedIn:

“Thank you to Lynn Sage Breast Cancer Foundation for opening the conference with a focus on menopause concerns of in patients diagnosed with breast cancer and the opportunity of speak with Lisa Larkin OncoMenopause Consortium.

  • Breast cancer is not one disease: the answer differs for previvors, DCIS, TNBC, and ER+ disease on therapy.
  • Not all hormone therapy is the same: route, type, and duration all change the risk
  • Vaginal estrogen: discuss it, start low, acknowledge the aromatase inhibitor data gap, and don’t withhold it.
  • Questions about testosterone are coming. As an oncology community we need shared recommendations on testosterone and other hormones. See National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) footnote on this.
  • New risk adapted guidelines in press as part of a modified Delphi panel with oncology and women’s health represented

Listen, then personalize, being clear about the data gaps and about what we know of recurrence biology and risk.”
