Judith Lacey: Yet again another excellent jam-packed MASCC conference

Judith Lacey, Head of Supportive Care and Integrative Oncology at Chris O’Brien Lifehouse, shared on LinkedIn:

“Yet again another excellent jam-packed The Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer (MASCC) conference. Thankyou Alex Chan, Florian Scotté and team!

I wish I could have made it to every session, heard every e-poster presentation and spoken to more people. I was overwhelmed by the richness of knowledge and expertise in the supportive oncology space.

It is always wonderful also to contribute each year in some way, this year with my wonderful colleagues and friends from the Society for Integrative Oncology with 2 excellent well attended sessions!

Personally , I want to say thankyou. Thankyou to all of those exceptional people who contribute to the growth, development and integration of supportive oncology as an essential pillar of comprehensive cancer care.

Thanks to the leadership of Raymond Chan and Maryam Lustberg we now have this short and concise document produced by MASCC and the Flinders Caring Futures Institute: excellent and worth sharing broadly.

Hopefully one day we will truely be recognised as the essential pillar of comprehensive cancer care we are. I have hope, thanks to people like Dorothy Keefe and Vivienne Milch for endless drive to make this happen at least in Australia!

The last 3 days have given me that boost needed to continue to advocate for my field of passion and commitment- supportive oncology :umbrella term used here to include integrative oncology, survivorship, exercise oncology, palliative care and other services in place to care for the whole person affected by cancer.

It’s a dynamic and exciting space to be in, with some exceptional research this year presented from Australia and around the world on the microbiome from Hannah Wardill and team, exercise and survivorship Nicolas Hart, Bogda Koczwara, Michael Jefford.

Integrative Oncology Santosh Rao, Suzanna Zick, Richard T. Lee, Nina Fuller-Shavel and all others not named!

There is also lot of work being done on medicinal cannabis on cipn and more!

And finally, keeping people living with an advanced cancer diagnosis that remains treatable but not curable is a huge area of need with some great sessions this year at MASCC24.

I look forward to working more in this space with exception people like Andrea Smith, Fran Boyle and learning from experts with lived experience to improve wellbeing and outcomes for more and improve equity of access.

We have so much to do!”
