We highlight a study done by the GFAOP in seven oncology units in Sub-Saharan Africa – CANCaRe Africa

CANCaRe Africa shared a post on LinkedIn:

“To improve knowledge on cancer burden we need to improve data collection, especially for cancer registries. The documented information must be standardized, to allow comparisons and evaluation of interventions at a national and international level.

Today we highlight a study done by the French-African Pediatric Oncology Group (GFAOP) in seven oncology units in Sub-Saharan Africa, assessing the feasibility of adapting the Toronto Guidelines (TG), to stage cancer types Additionally, they evaluated the impact of the assigned stage on survival.

Brenda Mallon, GFAOP Senior Clinical Research Coordinator: ‘We managed to assign ‘Toronto staging’ to 11 of the 15 cancer types and 89% of patients had a stage assigned. One year’s overall survival was 58%, and survival declined with the increasing stage. Metastatic or stage IV disease was assigned to 36% of staged patients.’

You are invited to read more about this pioneering research here.”
