Toufic Kachaamy: Steven Lin Explores Precision Radiotherapy for Organ Preservation and Cancer Control

Toufic Kachaamy, Leader of Endoscopic Oncology at Mayo Clinic Florida, shared on LinkedIn:

“Can we preserve the organ while maintaining cancer control?

Dr. Steven Lin of MD Anderson brought that question into focus in his presentation, ‘Precision Radiotherapy for Organ Preservation: The Rectum and Beyond.’

Several lessons stand out:

  • Treatment sequence matters. Total neoadjuvant therapy can create opportunities for rectal preservation in selected patients.
  •  Watch-and-wait requires active management: careful response assessment, intensive surveillance, and timely salvage surgery when needed.
  •  Precision includes where radiation is delivered, the dose, the timing, and the biology of the tumor.
  •  Esophageal preservation is an exciting frontier, with important challenges in identifying residual disease and predicting treatment response.

For those of us building endoscopic oncology programs, this reinforces how closely our work must connect with radiation oncology, medical oncology, surgery, radiology, and pathology.

Preserving an organ is meaningful when we also preserve function, quality of life, and oncologic safety.

Thank you, Dr. Lin, for connecting the evidence to the multidisciplinary programs needed to put it into practice.”
