Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre shared on LinkedIn:
“A ‘precision guided‘ CAR T-cell therapy designed at Peter Mac to kill solid tumours will progress to a first-in-human clinical trial thanks to almost $18 million from the Australian Government.
Developed by Professors Paul Beavis and Phil Darcy, and now being translated to the clinic by Professors Beavis and Jane Oliaro, the technology is designed to deliver cancer-killing immune signals directly to tumours.
By concentrating the immune response where it’s needed most, it has the potential to improve treatment effectiveness while reducing side effects.
The first clinical trial will evaluate the therapy in patients with multiple myeloma, providing a crucial step towards future trials in solid tumours, including breast and lung cancers.
This ambitious project brings together researchers, clinicians and industry partners across Peter Mac, the Centre of Excellence in Cellular Immunotherapy, Cell Therapies Pty Ltd and WEHI (Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research), demonstrating how Australian innovation is accelerating the journey from laboratory discovery to patient care.”
